At our dental practice in Santa Cruz, we customize dental treatments to patients’ needs. Generally, a comprehensive exam involves, a screening of the patient’s main concerns and needs followed with a complete medical and dental history, a set of radiographs (x-rays) is taken to establish a patient’s radiographic record baseline . Photographs and records of patient’s teeth via dental impressions are often taken to study and further customize dental treatments. A complete head and neck exam is done followed by an intraoral exam, that is, a complete exam of the mouth, teeth, soft tissues and patients’ functional oral anatomy. A periodontal exam is the assessment of the gum tissue to determine patients current dental and gum conditions to recommend specific dental cleanings geared to the assessed dental condition.
The comprehensive dental exam can take 45 to 60 minutes this allows to completely capture current patients’ dental conditions, discuss patients needs, concerns, questions and desires. After this initial visit a follow up appointment is created to discuss, explain and inform the patient of the determined and customized dental plan recommendations and of course answer any questions patient may have regarding their dental health education. Often, this appointment includes a dental cleaning geared toward the patient’s health, so please plan to spend 45 to 60 minutes for this appointment as well.
