X-rays are a form of high energy. High electromagnetic radiation that penetrates the body to form an image or in dentistry the electromagnetic radiation that penetrates teeth on a dental sensor or dental film to create the dental radiograph or image of your teeth.

There is low radiation exposure form dental x-rays, the dental radiation exposure is less than for example the the radiation exposed on a flight from NY to LA or from watching TV. Cellphones, fluorescent lamps, microwaves ovens and computers all emit more radiation than dental x-rays. We live in a radioactive world, we are exposed to natural radiation or background radiation everyday.

Steps are taken to ensure you receive less exposure to radiation when dental x-rays are taken. A lead apron is used to cover the body and reduce radiation exposure, metal items are removed to minimize interference. Patients who are pregnant need to inform us, dental radiographs are often avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Dental radiographs are a diagnostic tool and help with early detection of dental disease to ensure a healthy mouth over the lifetime. Finding and treating dental problems at early state can save time, money and prevent pain. Any concerns you may have as a dental patient please make sure to ask us!
